Before the Practical Test. Theory Test & What You Need.

Before booking your practical test, you’ll need to pass the theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section.

We provide all our learners with full access to the Theory Pro app, an interactive, DVSA-approved tool that helps you revise more effectively and track your progress.

It’s just one of the many ways we help learners pass the theory test on their first try.

Once you’ve passed, you can book your practical test online.

On the day, remember to bring:

  • Your provisional UK driving licence

Forget your provisional licence, and your test could be cancelled, and the fee will be lost!

How Long is the Driving Test?

The standard car driving test lasts around 40 minutes, while extended tests (usually for disqualified drivers) can run up to 70 minutes.

The test includes:

Eyesight Check

You’ll need to read a number plate from 20 metres.

Failing this ends the test immediately.

Vehicle Safety Questions

You’ll answer a “tell me” question at the start (e.g. “How would you check the brakes are working?”) and a “show me” question while driving (like using your windscreen wipers).

You can check out the questions in this video.

General Driving

The examiner will observe how you handle different road conditions, follow road signs, and carry out everyday driving tasks, including stopping safely, pulling away and hill starts.

One Manoeuvre

You’ll be asked to perform one reversing manoeuvre, such as parallel parking, bay parking or pulling up on the right and reversing.

Independent Driving

You’ll drive for about 20 minutes while following either a sat nav or road signs, showing you can make safe decisions without direct instructions.

What Will the Examiner Look For?

The examiner is checking that you can:

  • Drive safely and legally
  • Show awareness and anticipation
  • Use mirrors, signals, and controls correctly
  • Make decisions confidently and calmly

You’re allowed up to 15 minor faults, but just one serious or dangerous fault will result in a fail.

You’ll receive your result straight away, and feedback will be given on what went well and what needs improving.
