Learning to drive isn’t just about what happens during your weekly lesson. The progress you make between lessons can have a huge impact on how quickly you become a safe, confident driver.
We often remind our learners that driving is a skill and like any skill, regular practice and preparation make all the difference.
Here are some simple things you can do between lessons to keep improving, even when you’re not behind the wheel.
Reflect on Your Last Lesson
After every lesson, spend five minutes thinking about what went well and what you found difficult.
Did you struggle with roundabouts? Were junction observations improving? Was clutch control becoming easier?
Writing down a few notes helps you remember what to focus on during your next lesson instead of starting from scratch.
Read the Highway Code
Many learners only open the Highway Code when revising for their theory test, but it can help your practical driving too.
Understanding road signs, priorities, speed limits and road markings before you encounter them on the road makes driving feel far less overwhelming.
Watch Real Driving Videos
Watching real driving videos is a great way to reinforce what you’ve learned during lessons.
We regularly upload mock driving tests, practical test routes, driving tips and helpful tutorials to our YouTube channel.
Watching these videos can help you become familiar with real test situations and build confidence before your driving test.
As you watch, pause the video and ask yourself:
- What would I do here?
- Which mirrors would I check?
- Who has priority?
- What hazards can I see developing?
Training your brain to think ahead is one of the biggest steps towards becoming a safe, independent driver.
Keep Your Theory Knowledge Fresh
Even if your practical test feels like the priority, your theory knowledge supports every decision you make behind the wheel.
As one of our pupils, you’ll also receive FREE access to our Theory Test training app, giving you everything you need to practise multiple-choice questions, hazard perception clips and track your progress between lessons.
Keeping your theory knowledge fresh helps improve your decision-making and road awareness every time you get behind the wheel.
Ask Questions
No question is ever a silly question.
If something didn’t make sense during your lesson, ask your instructor next time. Understanding why you do something is far more valuable than simply memorising it.
Stay Positive
Every learner progresses at a different pace.
Some people master manoeuvres quickly but need more time with busy junctions. Others find roundabouts easy but need extra practice with parking.
Comparing yourself to friends or family only adds unnecessary pressure. Focus on your own progress and celebrate the small improvements each week.
Driving for Life, Not Just for a Test
Our goal isn’t simply to help you pass your driving test. We want you to become a confident, safe and independent driver for life.
By making the most of your time between lessons, using our free Theory Test app, watching our YouTube mock tests and test routes, and applying what you’ve learned, you’ll arrive at every lesson ready to progress.
Small steps each week lead to big results. Before long, you’ll be ready for your practical test with the confidence and skills to drive safely for years to come.
